Solar Installer Selection
The process of evaluating and choosing a solar installation company — the most important decision in any solar project, as installation quality determines long-term system performance.
Installer selection is the most consequential decision in going solar — more important than panel brand or system size. A great system poorly installed will underperform; a modest system well-installed will deliver reliable returns for 25+ years.
Key vetting criteria: NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) certification — the industry gold standard for installers; state contractor licensing and insurance verification (request certificates); years in business and local installation history (new companies may not be around for 25-year warranty claims); references from local completed installations; and transparent, itemized quotes that show equipment, labor, and soft costs separately.
Red flags: high-pressure sales tactics and "today only" pricing; quotes that don't specify panel model, wattage, and inverter type; refusing to provide the NABCEP certification number; requiring large deposits before permitting approval; and significantly lower quotes than competitors (often indicating reduced scope, cheaper equipment, or subcontracted labor without verification).
National brands (Sunrun, Tesla Energy, Sunnova) offer convenience and brand recognition; local installers often offer lower prices, faster installations, and more responsive local service. Getting 3–5 quotes from a mix of both is optimal.
Real-World Example
The homeowner declined the $38,000 quote from the door-to-door salesman who demanded a decision "by Friday" and selected instead a local NABCEP-certified 12-year company with 200 local installations, at $29,500 for identical equipment.
